About Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo Valley National Park is located in the far northeastern corner of Uganda in the Karamoja subregion, covering 1,442 square kilometres of semi-arid savannah, rocky outcrops, and mountain terrain at altitudes between 900 and 2,750 metres. The park borders South Sudan to the northwest and sits just 5 kilometres from the Kenyan border to the east, placing it at the remote frontier of Uganda’s protected area network. It was gazetted as a game reserve in 1958 and declared a national park in 1962.
The park is defined by two distinct valley systems. The Narus Valley in the south holds permanent water year-round, attracting the highest concentrations of wildlife and supporting the park’s main game drive circuits around Apoka. The Kidepo Valley to the north is drier and more remote, with a seasonal river that becomes a wide sand bed in the dry months and a dramatically open landscape framed by the Morungole Mountains on the Sudanese border. Together they create one of Africa’s most visually compelling and least visited safari environments.

Wildlife in Kidepo Valley National Park

Unique and Rare Species

Kidepo Valley National Park holds wildlife species found nowhere else in Uganda. It is the only park in the country with wild ostriches, cheetah, bat-eared fox, aardwolf, caracal, and black-backed jackal. Greater and lesser kudu are present in the thicker bush of the Kidepo Valley. The park’s semi-arid ecosystem shares more characteristics with Kenya’s northern wildlife zones than with Uganda’s equatorial parks, giving it a distinctly different species composition from every other national park in the country.

Large Mammals and Big Game

Kidepo supports 77 mammal species including lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, Rothschild’s giraffe, zebra, eland, Uganda kob, hartebeest, waterbuck, warthog, and hippo. Four of the Big Five are present. In March 2026, four southern white rhinos were reintroduced to the park from Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, marking the beginning of a rhino recovery programme within the park. Lion prides are commonly seen around Apoka, and cheetah sightings are among the most reliable in East Africa on the open Narus Valley plains.

Birds

Kidepo Valley National Park records 476 bird species, the second highest count of any Uganda national park after Queen Elizabeth. The park holds several species absent from Uganda’s southern parks, including the ostrich, kori bustard, Abyssinian roller, white-crested turaco, and fox’s weaver. The Kanagorok hot springs 30 kilometres north of Apoka are a productive birding location, and the park is one of the few reliable sites in Uganda for secretary bird sightings.

Activities in Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo Valley Exploration

The drier northern Kidepo Valley offers a more remote and exploratory game drive experience, with the seasonal Kidepo River crossing and the Kanagorok hot springs as key stops. Wildlife density is lower than the Narus Valley but the landscape is exceptional, with open plains and rocky outcrops creating dramatic scenery. Ostrich, greater kudu, and cheetah are most commonly encountered in this part of the park.

Game Drives

Game drives in Kidepo Valley National Park operate primarily through the Narus Valley around Apoka, where two 20-kilometre circuits cover the park’s most productive wildlife areas. Permanent water sources in the valley attract large buffalo herds, elephant, lion, and giraffe year-round. Morning and late afternoon drives are standard, and the open landscape makes Kidepo one of Uganda’s most photogenic game drive environments, with distant mountain ranges as a constant backdrop.

Cultural Experiences

The Karamoja subregion surrounding the park is home to the Karamojong, one of Uganda’s most distinct indigenous cultures, as well as the Ik people of the Timu Forest escarpment. Guided cultural visits to Karamojong manyattas offer an encounter with a traditional pastoral lifestyle that has remained largely unchanged for centuries, adding a cultural dimension rarely available in Uganda’s southern parks.

Nature Walks

Guided nature walks are available from Apoka through the Narus Valley grasslands and along the park boundary, offering a ground-level perspective on Kidepo’s open savannah environment. The walks cover smaller wildlife, birdlife, and the park’s distinctive vegetation, which shifts between open grassland, acacia woodland, and rocky escarpment depending on the route.

Getting to Kidepo Valley National Park

By Road

The most direct road route from Kampala to Kidepo Valley National Park runs via Gulu and Kitgum, covering approximately 571 kilometres and taking 9 to 10 hours. The road is surfaced for the majority of the route and is the most practical overland option. Most travellers break the journey with an overnight stop, either at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary en route or in Gulu or Kitgum. From Murchison Falls National Park, the drive takes approximately 7 hours, making a combined northern circuit itinerary the most efficient overland approach.

By Air

Aerolink Uganda and Bar Aviation operate scheduled and charter flights from Entebbe to Lomej airstrip near Apoka in approximately 2 hours. The airstrip is 3 kilometres from Apoka safari lodge and the park visitor centre. Flying is strongly recommended for travellers with limited time, as it eliminates the 9 to 10 hour overland journey and allows more days in the park rather than in transit.

Best Time to Visit Kidepo Valley National Park

Dry Season (December to March)

The dry season is the best period for wildlife viewing in Kidepo, with animals concentrating around the Narus Valley water sources as the landscape dries out. Cheetah sightings on the short-grass plains are most reliable during these months, and game drive visibility is at its highest across the open savannah. Temperatures are higher during the dry season, often reaching 40 degrees Celsius, so early morning and late afternoon drives are essential.

Green Season (April to November)

The green season brings lush vegetation and significantly stronger birding conditions, with migratory species present and bird activity high across both valley systems. Wildlife disperses more widely across the park during wetter months, making sightings less predictable but the landscape more dramatic. Kidepo receives less rainfall than Uganda’s southern parks due to its semi-arid climate, and activities continue throughout the wet season with a capable 4WD vehicle.

Kidepo Insight

A minimum of 2 to 3 nights is recommended to make the journey worthwhile. The combination of the Narus Valley game circuits, the Kidepo Valley exploration, and a cultural visit to a Karamojong manyatta requires at least two full days in the park to experience properly.

Where to Stay in Kidepo Valley National Park

Accommodation in Kidepo Valley National Park is limited compared to Uganda’s southern parks, with a small number of lodges concentrated around Apoka in the heart of the Narus Valley. The remote location and low visitor numbers mean the park retains an exclusive atmosphere regardless of which accommodation tier you choose.

Budget

Budget accommodation near Kidepo includes the UWA-managed Apoka Rest Camp inside the park, offering basic bandas and camping facilities with direct access to the Narus Valley game circuits. It is the most affordable base for game drives and the Kidepo Valley exploration.

Mid-Range

Mid-range options near Kidepo include simple tented lodges on the park boundary that offer meals, guided game drives, and Narus Valley access at practical price points. Facilities are comfortable rather than luxurious, in keeping with the park’s remote and unfenced wilderness setting.

Luxury

Apoka Safari Lodge is the park’s primary luxury property, positioned on a low rise in the centre of the Narus Valley plains with wildlife visible from the lodge grounds throughout the day. It offers spacious banda accommodation, a raised dining and bar area with panoramic valley views, and guided activities across both valley systems.
